The paper considers some of the challenges faced by teachers as they attempted to use research evidence, and discusses implications for schools wishing to use research evidence in practice. Although teachers showed that they could engage with research evidence, the study indicated that the process was complex in practice. Recent efforts to improve the quality and availability of scientific research in education, coupled with increased expectations for the use of research in practice, demand new ways of thinking about connections between research and practice. This essay begins by discussing current cynicism regarding the usefulness of research-based strategies in the field of education.
Supporting evidence-informed practice with children and families, young people and adults
It is important to consider the variation in the included studies’ quality, as several studies had fair quality only. Despite the assumption that nurses would use computers and reference materials to provide EBP, great variations can be observed from results on the actual information sources used by nurses. Least commonly reported sources of information included experiences and preferences of patients and their families. Advice from peers could significantly deviate from the best evidence in the literature (Schaafsma et al., 2005).

- But to claim as many do that it is an ‘emerging field’ illustrates how easy it is, even with the best of intentions, to ignore existing expertise on the production and use of evidence.
- It is important to consider the variation in the included studies’ quality, as several studies had fair quality only.
- Once relevant research has been identified, it is essential to assess the quality and applicability of the evidence.
- We planned to exclude studies whose participants were registered health and social care practitioners and postgraduate students.
- Current interest in systematic reviews and evidence-informed education and health promotion is part of a general move in the UK and elsewhere towards basing policy and professional practice on sound evidence.
- However, we could not explore these objectives in the final review because we did not identify any eligible studies for inclusion.
One is not expected to be a researcher to effectively implement evidence‐informed practice. Epstein (2009)’s integrative model of evidence‐informed practice is presented in the form of a Venn diagram, which highlights the commonalities and intersections among the concepts. This will ensure that all forms of evidence are considered during decision‐making in healthcare practice. Hence, healthcare training institutions are required to integrate the principles and processes involved in the application of evidence into undergraduate health and social care curricula. Evidence‐informed practice, on the other hand, is defined as the assimilation of professional judgment and research evidence regarding the efficiency of interventions (McSherry et al., 2002). According to these authors, the effective and consistent application of evidence into practice helps practitioners to deliver the best care to their patients and patient relatives.

These suggestions were intended to improve services in Universities that cater to mental health, religiosity, and suicidality. In this research study, we were able to state our biases before gathering data. This required data collection and critical thinking to fully grasp the concepts of this research. As a social worker, it is important to familiarize ourselves with cultures other than our own. In this course, I completed a literature review on domestic violence in Bangladesh. Their focus population are people who are homeless so their data is more generalized rather than an agency who specializes in the latino/hispanic community.
The emphasis on empirical knowledge development overshadows other ways of knowledge development—personal, aesthetic, and ethical. Frequent use of formal information sources could not only aid in the development of professional nursing but could also help in implementing and sustaining EBP. Moreover, the wide time span of the included studies should be considered, National Academies report on mental health as guidelines for reporting empirical studies have improved the quality of journal articles over the years.
